In this podcast episode, I’m tackling the question you might be afraid to ask yourself. Too many people tell me that they just want to make enough money to cover the bills and in the same breath, they say they want financial freedom and independence.
That doesn’t come from just making enough to cover the bills.
So let’s dive deeper into this!
In today’s podcast episode, I want to talk to you about why you feel like you shouldn’t earn more in your business.
So let’s unpack this because I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard other people say this and I’ve also said it too (in the early days!)
“I don’t like to think about my income goals” (this alone will be a separate podcast episode – it’s a good one!)
I’m amazed at how many people don’t think about income goals, because it’s scary.
There’s this idea of ‘I just want to make enough to cover my bills, enough to cover my expenses’, and that’s all well and good.
But whatever happened to actually asking for what you want and allowing yourself to receive that?
Why is it that we feel, especially as women, that we should just ask for the bare minimum?
‘I’m just going to cover my bills, if I could just have the odd holiday’.
I remember talking to a client about this recently and the revulsion she felt when someone said to her when she was starting out in business, that ‘oh my neighbour does this work and she literally just gets enough to cover a holiday a year‘
And my client was horrified. She was like, ‘oh, my God, why would you do that? For so little reward?’
When we start our businesses, we want to create financial freedom.
And that financial freedom doesn’t come from just making enough.
And it’s also about understanding that it’s okay to want to have more.
There is nothing wrong with that.
It is really about unpacking what it means. Am I being greedy if I ask for more?

Now, for a lot of people, 8k a month would be transformational. Okay, there are some people that I talk to, and they’ve made like, 1, 2 or maybe 3k a month, and they’re really wanting to ramp up.
But a big part of them has this resistance. And 8k just feels like it’s so far away.
And so let’s talk about this.
First of all, it’s just a number.
It really is just a number.
But why are we so afraid of wanting that claiming that owning that and saying, yes, I want to make 8k a month and I’m going to cover my bills. I’m going to cover my expenses, and I’m going to have plenty left over.
Just feel that in your body right now.
Just feel it.
Imagine you are going to make yourself a cup of tea or cup of coffee.
And you’re a business owner who makes 8k a month.
How does that feel in your body, your physical body, your energy body?
How does that feel?
If it feels really exciting and thrilling, then great.
If you’re feeling exciting or if it feels exciting and thrilling and yet you’re like, oh, I don’t know how that’s going to happen.
That’s okay, too.
If there’s just a straight out never going to happen, then there’s just a little bit of work to be done there!
It totally is possible.
But I just want you to really feel into that because it’s truly not about the money.
I know you’re probably thinking, come on, Yasmin, pull the other one!
The truth is it’s about who you become in the quest for that goal.
It’s about the things that you do. It’s about the way that you be in your business that allows you to achieve that goal.
You hit 8k months, and then you’re like, going, ‘this is my new normal.’
And the truth is that you don’t want to just cover the bills.
You don’t just want to cover the expenses.
You do want more.
Admit it to yourself right now. Come on.
Just between you and me 😉 you do want more.
Are we okay to admit that even just owning it for yourself and saying, yes, I actually want 8k more and beyond, because you know what?
There is no greater feeling than knowing that if you wanted to book that little extra break, a little holiday, maybe, and you know you can.
When bills come in and you just pay them with a really glad heart and you’re thankful for what those bills represent.
Electricity, your phone, your broadband, your food, your home, whatever it might be.
I know what it feels like to be in that space of constriction and angst and worry about how am I going to pay the mortgage?
I’ve been there. It’s horrible. And there’s no way I would go back to that.
And so you think, okay, how is it going to make you feel so by not claiming what you actually want by just saying, I just want to cover the bills.
That’s the message that you keep putting out to the universe, that this is all I want.
This is fine. And you know what happens. That’s what you get.
That’s what you keep creating.
And so it’s about creating a new reality for yourself, because let’s talk about what that money is going to do for you.
Yes, it’s going to cover your bills and your expenses and give you some money to play with.
But it also gives you space in your business.
This is probably the most exciting thing that I found once I really started to get into the flow of high earning months where I was able to really give myself space to think about…
So where do I want to take the business?
It allowed me space to be more creative to be able to create more digital assets.
Leveraged assets in my business that do the heavy lifting for me, with systems and automation.
It allows you to spend time building that up rather than always being so short term in your business.
When the focus is on ‘I need to make money to cover the bills‘, you end up making a lot of short term decisions, and sometimes (most times!) they’re not in the best interest of your business.
You’re here because you want to do the work you love, you want to get well paid for it. You want to work with dreamy clients (I get to work with amazing people. We always have such a blast!)
And that is because that’s because I’ve designed it that way.
But you want to be able to give yourself space to be able to do that rather than ‘What would I offer today?’ Because you’re in a panic.
You’re in that desperate energy.
Let’s use the analogy of dating which is always a really good analogy, I think for business development. If you went on a date with somebody and you’re like, ‘So we’re on our first date…what kind of a wedding do you want? And how many kids do you want? And where do you want to build our house or where do you want to live?‘
And you’re like, well, easy there, Tiger!
We haven’t even had dinner yet!
And that’s the energy that you put out there in business.
Whatever you put out there is what you get back.
It’s just law.
It’s just the way that the universe works.
And remember, it’s not about the words that you’re using.
You could just be repeating affirmations to yourself.
But it’s how you feel that’s what is reflected back to you.
So if you’re saying to say to somebody like, I want to make 5k a month.
But inside you’re thinking, ‘if I could just make 1k, that would be really good.’
That’s the message that’s going out energetically, not what you’re speaking, but what you’re actually feeling.
And so I want you today, as a result of listening to this podcast, whether you’re reading on the blog or whether you’re watching the video or listening to it on the podcast.
I want you just to take a moment to really ground yourself and be honest with yourself.
Do you just want to cover the bills and expenses, or do you want more?
And if you find that there’s a resistance there – I would really encourage you to journal on that.
Why do I feel like I’m not allowed more?
Why do I feel like I can’t receive more?
You can put it out there but you also need to expand your vision and identity of yourself (capacity) to enable you to receive that.
Because if you’re not willing to receive the money that you actually dream of and desire, then it won’t come because the vessel (for want of a better word!), the vessel is not big enough.
At the moment, the energy that you’re putting out there is say, we use 1k as an example, and it’s a little cup, and you want 5k or 8k, but your cup is still at the small size, so it’s not big enough.
So you have to be open to receiving that money.
The first step is about claiming it and owning it and say, ‘I want more, and there ain’t nothing wrong with wanting more!’
