The Lowdown

How do you know if your marketing is working or not? If you’re not attracting new new leads, appointments, bookings and clients, chances are something is not working.

And it could be your marketing.

It’s frustrating.

You’re trying so many different things and you’re exhausted.

You want to jack it in.

You’ve had enough.

You hate marketing (and it’s sister activity, sales!)

You look at others and wonder how they make it look so easy

I’ve been there (boy, have I been there!) and today, I want to share 3 possible reasons why your marketing isn’t working:

  1. Your marketing message lacks diamond-precision clarity
  2. You’re trying too many things at once
  3. You’re giving up too early.

Let’s take each one in turn….

Reason 1: Your marketing message is not clear enough

We have so much information at our disposal that we believe that if we just did enough marketing, we’d have a full practice, a full book of clients.

The problem is no amount of marketing will work if your ideal client cannot hear your message and ‘get it‘.

If the right person doesn’t hear your message, it’s not working.

If the ‘wrong‘ people hear your message, it’s not working! (sounds crazy I know!)

This is the bedrock of every single business. It doesn’t matter how much you market – if your message is not clear to your ideal client, this is what you need to work on.

Stop marketing and instead get clear.

The solution to this comes in 2 parts – answer these 2 questions:

  1. What do you do?
  2. Who do you do it for? i.e. your ideal client

As a starting point, take a blank piece of paper and jot the answers out. There’s great clarity in writing things down instead of it swimming around in your head!

The key thing here is to remember there’s no point to marketing if you’re not clear on what you’re marketing and for whom.

Absolutely none at all!

Reason 2: You’re trying too many things at once

Are you trying to straddle all the social media platforms? Are you doing FB lives all the time? Are you blogging? Are you going to all the networking events you can think of? Are you doing webinars? Podcasts?

You could be forgiven for thinking you need to do all these things – isn’t that what the gurus say?

But the problem is when you try everything, you don’t know what’s working for you!

So you keep on doing more and more! And you get more and more burnt out and royally fed up!

You can’t do every single marketing strategy out there. You haven’t got the time.

So you have to get very specific and focused.

A simple way of seeing what is working for you is to ask! When someone books in a call with you or buys a program, product or service, ask ‘how did you find me?‘ and track it!

See where the great leads are coming from and do more of that!

It will take some time to see a clear pattern but instead of continuing a haphazard approach, get more laser-focused!

Reason 3: You’re giving up too easily…

Do you try something and after a week, give up?

Are you constantly chasing shiny new marketing strategies without giving them sufficient time to bed in and create results for you.

We all do it but it’s the awareness of it that is crucial.

Knowing we do something that could be detrimental to our success is the first step.

Stopping it is the next!

If you’re trying to do everything, you are far more likely to give up as it takes up too much of your time.

But if you pick, for example, 2 ways to market and do them consistently, you will be far more likely to be successful.

You won’t get overnight results (there are no quick fixes) but once you know what works, you can keep working that strategy and now you can build momentum.

But if you don’t take the time to see what actually works, you will be forever throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping some of it sticks.

And that will be far more stressful! And a lot harder on your purse!

Here’s what you do….

Become a scientist in your business laboratory!

Be prepared to test, tweak and see what works.

There are no shortcuts but once you know what works, now you’re cooking!

When it comes to marketing, keep these 2 things at the front of your mind:

How does my ideal client want me to talk to them?

How do I like to market?

And if you know you don’t have clarity on your marketing message, you are trying to do too much and you have a tendency to chase shiny objects, book a tiny time triage call and let me help you create the clarity you need to market effectively so you can attract new leads and clients, consistently.

Marketing is actually very easy and enjoyable once you have a clear message and a clear channel that works. It can just feel like an uphill struggle until you get to that point.
