Hello, lovely. How are you? This is Yasmin from Tiny Time, Big Results.

In this episode, I want to talk to you about why your copy might not be hitting its mark. So I want to share with you this really important hot copywriting tip.

Let me just set the context for you. One of the things I do with my 1:1 clients is to review their content, give them feedback and make suggestions. The number one thing that I always see when people start working with me is their copy is very ‘professional‘. It can have very stiff language in it. It’s almost like, they think this is how they should come across, with very formal language. Now, if you’ve been in my world for any length of time, you know that this is how I talk, this is how I write. Even when I was writing my book, I had someone say to me, It was like you were actually reading it to me. It was like you were in front of me (this is powerful because it builds rapport).

Here’s what I want you to know. Any copy you’re writing (I’m talking about email, podcast like this, social media posts etc) whatever you are creating; you want to make sure that the way that you’re communicating is not formal and stiff, but conversational.

Because the truth is, we converse with people, we connect, we communicate. After lockdown, people were so against virtual events once everything started opening back up again. And it’s because we love having those conversations, maybe over coffee. It’s natural and it feels really organic.

It doesn’t just apply to talking. We can adopt that strategy into the way that we write copy, the way that we speak to our ideal clients. I want you to put yourself in the shoes of your ideal client, the person that really wants to hear from you. And what she doesn’t want is to have a look at this block of copy and just lose the will!

I was in corporate for 12 years before I started my business. And one of the things that really frustrated me was any time any corporate communications came through, I’d have to read it over and over again to make sense of it because it was just such stiff language.

I know they were trying to cover their backsides. They were trying to make sure that there was no vague interpretations. But YOU don’t have to do that. You can use much simpler language. Because the truth is that from a learning perspective, if we’re reading something over and over again, it actually makes our brains more stupid. I read that somewhere, so don’t hold me to it.

But it actually makes sense because have you ever noticed that when you’re reading a book and there’s a bit that’s a bit complicated, you read it over and over and over again in the hope that it’s going to actually make sense. And then I read this great tip where it said, don’t do that because it is training your brain to work slower. Instead, what you do is you carry on reading because no doubt there will be some form of an explanation, something that will actually make it much easier to understand that. Somebody might state the principle and then explain what it is. I’ve applied that and it works like a charm!

So we don’t want people to have to do all of those things. We want our copy and our communication to be really easy to consume.

My Secret Sauce

And I love when people go, ‘Oh, what’s magnetic messaging? I want to know more about that’. Already, they’re magnetised by the word magnetic!

It’s important to keep everything nice and simple for our audience because in a world where our attention is the currency, you’ve got to make it really easy to hook them in, keep their attention, engage them, and then they go, ‘Oh, that was really valuable. That was really useful!

Top Tip #1!

First of all, when you’re writing copy or video (it doesn’t matter what form it is) aim it at one person only.

Why? Well, right now – I’m in my home office, and when somebody emails me and says, ‘Hey, everybody’ well, there’s nobody else here. It’s just me. So think of your reader in that way as well. Aim it at one person. So I will say things like, Hey, lovely, because that’s a thing I do. And I’ll talk as if I’m just talking to you. Right now, I am just talking to you, right? Nobody else. Okay? So aim it at one person.

Top Tip #2! (bonus tip!)

Secondly, keep it simple. Use simple language. Keep it really nice and simple because that will then mean that it will be understood and keep it conversational, right? Because that’s how we connect with people.

You don’t want it to feel all stiff and formal. Keep it conversational. People will get value from what you’re sharing, and then they’ll see that you could be the person who can help me.

And it makes it more likely for them to become a paying client.
